Welcome to the Continent of Africa

The continent of Africa is home to fifty-two countries and one territory. On this page you will find a wealth of information about several of these countries. Contrary to what you may hear in the media or read in publications, most African Countries have very stable governments, consistent economic growth and development.

Benin

West Africa
Benin, known as Benin Republic, is a country in Western Africa. Benin's capital is officialy Porto-Novo otherwise known as Cotonou. The population of Benin is about 6,000,000. It borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north; its short coastline to the south leads to the Bight of Benin.

 

Botswana

Southern Africa
The Republic of Botswana, is a landlocked nation in Southern Africa. Citizens of Botswana are Batswana or Motswana which is singular, regardless of ethnicity. Botswana's captial is Gaborone. The population of Botwsana is estimated at 1, 500 000. The economy, closely tied to South Africa's, is dominated by mining (especially diamonds), tourism, and cattle. The main languages spoken are English, which is teh official language, and Setswana.

 

Burkina Faso

West Africa
Burkina Faso (pronounced burr-KEE-na FAH-soh), also known by its short-form name Burkina, is a landlocked nation in West Africa. Burkina Faso's capital is Ouagadougou. It is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north, Niger to the east, Benin to the south east, Togo and Ghana to the south, and Côte d'Ivoire to the south west. Burkina has an estimate population of 11 900 000.

 

Chad

North Africa
Chad, officially known as the Republic of Chad, is a landlocked country in central Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the northwest, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest, and Niger to the west. Chad's capital is N'Djamena. Chad's population is roughly 8, 400 000. The country is divided into three major geographical regions: a desert zone, an arid Sahelian belt and a more fertile Sudanese savanna zone. Lake Chad, is the largest wetland in Chad and the second largest in Africa. Chad's highest peak is the Emi Koussi in the Sahara.

 

Dem. Rep of Congo

Southern Africa
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, often referred to as DR Congo, DRC or RDC, is the third largest country by area in Africa. Though it is located in the Central African UN subregion. It's capital is Kinshas. The population of the country is estimated at 51, 900 000. The country enjoys access to the ocean through a forty-kilometre stretch of Atlantic coastline at Muanda and the roughly nine-kilometre wide mouth of the Congo river which opens into the Gulf of Guinea.

 

Egypt

North Africa, Sahara Desert Expiditions
Egypt, officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is an Arab country in North Africa and partly, due to the Sinai Peninsula, in southwestern Asia. Egypt's captial is Cairo. The population of Egypt is roughly 68, 300 000. It covers an area of about 1,001,450 square kilometers (386,660 sq mi), Egypt borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west. Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world's most famous monuments, including the Giza pyramid complex and its Great Sphinx.

 

Ethiopia

East Africa
Ethiopia, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, is a landlocked country situated in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Sudan to the west, Kenya to the south, Somalia to the east and Djibouti to the north-east. It's capital is Addis Ababa. The population of Ethiopia is estimated at 64, 100 000. Ethiopia has many distinct geographical zones and contrasts, varying from 120 metres below sea level in the salt flats of the Danakil depression, to Ras Dashan, the fourth highest peak in Africa, in the Simien mountains.

 

Ghana

West Africa
The Republic of Ghana is a country in West Africa. It borders Côte d'Ivoire (also known as Ivory Coast) to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. The capital of Ghana is Accra. Ghana's population is estimated at 19, 500 000. From Ghana's coastline grassy plains stretch inland, toward the east and into the south and west it is which are covered by rainforests. Ghana still boasts 42 European forts and castles including Elmina and Cape Coast Castles.

 

Guinea

West Africa
Guinea, officially Republic of Guinea, is a country in West Africa, formerly known as French Guinea. The country's current population is estimated at 10,200 000. Conakry is Guinea's capital, seat of the national government and largest city. The base of Guinea, borders Guinea-Bissau and Senegal to the north, and Mali to the north and north-east; the inland part borders Côte d'Ivoire to the south-east, Liberia to the south, and Sierra Leone to the west of the southern tip. Its water sources include the Niger, Senegal, and Gambia rivers.

 

Kenya

East Africa
The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the northeast, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, and Sudan to the northwest, with a southeast coastline. The country is named after Mount Kenya. It's capital is Nairobi. Kenya's population is estimated at 30,300,00. Kenya has some of the continent's most magnificent wildlife and scenery. Kenya's incredible beauty varies from the coral reefs and white sand beaches of the coast to the summit of Mount Kenya.

 

Libya

North Africa
Libya, officially the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, GSPLAJ, is an Arab country in North Africa. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Libya lies between Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. The capital, Tripoli, is home to 1.7 million of Libya's estimated 5.7 million people. With an area of almost 1.8 million square kilometres (700,000 sq mi), 90% of which is desert. Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa by area, and the 17th largest in the world. The three traditional parts of the country are Tripolitania, the Fezzan and Cyrenaica.

 

Malawi

Southern Africa
The Republic of Malawi (formerly Nyasaland) is in southern Africa. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast and Mozambique, which surrounds it on the east, south and west and is separated from Malawi by Lake Malawi (also Lake Nyasa). Malawi's capital is Lilongwe. The popultaion of Malawi to date is estimated at 13,900,000. Malawi's largest city is Blantyre. The origin of the name Malawi is unclear; it is either derived from that of southern tribes, or from the "glitter of the sun rising across the lake" (as seen in its flag).

 

Mali

Mali, officially the Republic of Mali, is a landlocked nation in Western Africa. Mali is the seventh largest country in Africa, bordering Algeria on the north, Niger on the east, Burkina Faso and the Côte d'Ivoire on the south, Guinea on the south-west, and Senegal and Mauritania on the west. Mali's capital is Bamako. The countries population is estimated at 11,900,000. Mali is the world's 24th-largest country and is comparable in size to South Africa or Peru. Mali's coastline lies on it's western border. Most of the country lies in the southern Sahara.

 

Mauritania

West Africa, Sahara Desert Expeditions
Mauritania, officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in northwest Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, by Senegal on the southwest, by Mali on the east and southeast, by Algeria on the northeast, and by the Morocco-controlled Western Sahara on the northwest. The capital and largest city is Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast. The countries capital is Nouakchott. The population of the country is estimated at 3,000,000. The concentric Guelb er Richat (also known as the Richat Structure) is a prominent feature of the north-central region.

 

Morocco

North Africa
Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a North African country with a population of 33,757,175. Its Atlantic Ocean coastline reaches past the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean Sea and has international borders with Algeria to the east, Spain to the north, and Mauritania to the south. Morocco's capital is Rabat. Volubilis is an archaeological site in Morocco situated in Meknez, situated between Fes and Rabat. Volubilis features the best preserved ruins in this part of northern Africa.

 

Mozambique

Southern Africa
Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique, is a country in southeastern Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. It's capital is Maputo. The countries population is estimated at 21,300,000. The Island of Mozambique lies off northern Mozambique, between the Mozambique Channel and Mossuril Bay. It has a population of around 14,000 people and is part of Nampula Province.

 

Namibia

Southern Africa
Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in southern Africa with an Atlantic coastline. It shares borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east, and South Africa to the south. Namibia capital is Windhoek and the counrties population is now estimated at 1,800,000. The northern part of Namibia's Atllantic coastline is called the Skeleton Coast which is littered with shipwrecks. The Bushmen of the Namibian interior called the region "The Land God Made in Anger", while Portuguese sailors once referred to it as "The Gates of Hell".

 

Niger

West Africa
Niger, officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. It borders Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, Algeria and Libya to the north and Chad to the east. The capital city is Niamey and the countries population is 13,200,000. The Kaouar escarpment, is a north-south escarpment running some 150 km in north east Niger, forming an oasis in the Ténéré desert.

 

Senegal

West Africa
Senegal, officially the Republic of Senegal, is a country south of the Sénégal River in western Africa. Senegal is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Mauritania to the north, Mali to the east, and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south. Senegal's capital is Dakar. The countries population is estimated at 11,600,000. The Gambia River is a major river that runs into practically over half way into Senegal. It spans a length of 1,130 km (700 miles), running from the Fouta Djallon plateau in north Guinea westward to the Atlantic Ocean at the city of Banjul. It is navigable for about half that length.

 

South Africa

Southern Africa
The Republic of South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of Africa. South Africa's coast stretches 2,798 kilometres and borders both the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The Kingdom of Lesotho is an independent enclave surrounded by South African territory. South Africa has 3 capitals, Pretoria being the main one. South Africa is well known for its fynbos which is unique to the country, found in the Western Cape., as well as the carpets of flowers during the flower season in Namaqualand, in the Northern Cape.

 

Sudan

North Africa, Sahara Desert Expeditions
Sudan (officially the Republic of Sudan) is the largest country in Africa and the Arab World, as well as the 10th largest country in the world by area. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, Kenya and Uganda to the southeast. Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, is situated at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles. The population of Sudan is estimated at 39,300,000. The Red Sea, with its crystal clear water, its variety of fish and its incredible marine gardens and coral reefs, is one of Sudan's main attractions.

 

Tanzania

East Africa
Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is a country in East Africa bordered by Kenya and Uganda on the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique on the south. Its coastline lies on the Indian Ocean. The countries capital is Dodoma. Tanzania has an estimated population of 37,800,000. With highlights like Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar, Tanzania is definitely a country to be recognised both in terms of wildlife and beauty.

 

Togo

West Africa
Togo, officially the Togolese Republic, is a narrow country in West Africa bordering Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. The country extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, on which the capital Lomé is located. The official language is French; however, there are many other languages spoken there as well. Togo's capital is Lomé. The population is estimated at 6,300,000. Togo's national parks are home to buffalo, elephants and antelope, as well as various tropical bird species. The country's plateau is characterised by its many coffe and cocoa farms as well as its waterfalls and palm plantations.

 

Tunisia

North Africa
Tunisia, officially the Tunisian Republic, is an Arab country located in North Africa. It is bordered by Algeria to the west and Libya to the southeast. It is the northernmost African country and the smallest of the nations situated along the Atlas mountain range. Tunisia's capital is Tunis. The country has an estimated population of 10,100,000. In Tunis, there is a Roman Catholic cathedral called The Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul as well as the Zitouna Great Mosque.

 

Uganda

East Africa
The Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered on the east by Kenya, on the north by Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania. Uganda's capital is Kampala and the country has an estimated population of 30,900,000. Uganda occupies most of Lake Victoria. Kabale is a district in western Uganda. Like other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town'.

 

Zambia

Southern Africa
The Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. The neighbouring countries are the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the north-east, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west. The capital city is Lusaka, located in the southeast of the country. The population is estimated at 11,600,000. There is a statue of David Livingstone on the Zambian side of teh Vicoria falls. The well known Zambezi river is situated in Zambia.

 

Zanzibar

East Africa
Zanzibar is part of the East African republic of Tanzania. The capital is Zanizbar City. The island has a total population of 1,070,000. It consists of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 km (15–30 mi) off the coast off the mainland. Zanzibar City and its older quater are known as Stone Town and is now a World Heritage Site.

 

Zimbabwe

Southern Africa
Zimbabwe, officailly the Republic of Zimbabwe was formerly the British Crown colony of Southern Rhodesia. Tha capital of Zimbabwe is Harare. This landlocked country is positioned in southern Africa, and bordered by the countries of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa. The country has an estimated population of 12,200,000. The country is well known for it breathtakingly Views of Victoria Falls. Zimbabwe is also known worldwide for its outstanding game preserves, national parks and incredible varieties of wildlife.
